Teck Resources Limited and the UBC Faculty of Applied Science are launching the Don Lindsay Teck Award in Mining Engineering.

Teck’s $1 million endowment will generate annual, renewable scholarships for students studying within UBC Applied Science at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. This provides crucial financial support for those who will help mine the critical metals and minerals we need to transition to a cleaner economy.

"The Don Lindsay Teck Award in Mining Engineering will shape the next generation of mining engineers,” said James Olson, Dean of the UBC Faculty of Applied Science. “With Teck’s help, UBC is building the mining industry of tomorrow, which will leverage critical minerals to solve climate change. We extend our deepest gratitude to Teck for this endowment, and its immeasurable impact on education and research at UBC Engineering.”

The award is named in recognition of long-time UBC supporter, and former Teck President and CEO, Don Lindsay, whose enduring legacy and lasting contributions to the mining sector in Canada and internationally. Alongside leading Teck on its journey to become a global leader in responsible resource development with significant growth potential during his 17-year tenure, Mr. Lindsay’s commitment to philanthropy and supporting the next generation of mining talent has left an incredible mark on the mining sector.

"I am honoured to be recognized by Teck and UBC through the establishment of the Don Lindsay Teck Award in Mining Engineering," said Lindsay. "Throughout my years in the mining sector, I have supported and worked alongside numerous faculty, alumni, and students of these two prestigious mining schools and it’s clear how crucial they are to building new talent for our industry. The mining engineering students of today will undoubtedly shape the industry’s future and I feel very privileged to be part of this success."

The Don Lindsay Teck Award in Mining Engineering builds on the longstanding partnership between Teck and UBC, which spans decades and aligns with Teck’s commitment to increasing the pipeline of mining industry talent to strengthen the industry's future.

Including this new award, Teck has now provided $12 million in funding for the Faculty of Applied Science since 2001 to support education and research. More than 200 UBC Applied Science students have completed co-op placements at Teck since 2017. The company is also the all-time third-largest employer of UBC Applied Science co-op students. Hundreds of Teck’s Canadian employees are believed to have studied at UBC.
