Interdisciplinary research
in Applied Science
Below are examples of some of the many areas of research areas in the Faculty of Applied Science. Provided is a list of example researchers as well as examples of research topics and resources.
Health:
As one of Canada's top universities, UBC is also home to one of the largest medical schools in North America and is engaged in a wide network of participating institutions, hospitals, and numerous centers and research laboratories. Research spans the wide range from micro-scale tools for basic science and drug discovery to bedside diagnostic tools to assistive robotic tools for surgeons. Example research areas are:
- Imaging / CAS / Robotics
- Biomaterials and Biomechanics
- BioMEMS / Drug Delivery / Biosignals
- Biomedical / Biotechnological Processes
- Nursing / Patient Care / Patient Environments
Clean Energy Research Centre
Energy:
Sustainable clean energy is one of the main issues of the 21st century. Multi-disciplinary research teams collaborate on increasing efficiency, decreasing harmful emissions of conventional energy conversion processes and developing new alternate energy process and technologies. The Clean Energy Research Center provides state-of-the-art research facilities. Example research areas are:
- Water
- Carbon Capture and Storage
- Oil & Gas
- Electric Vehicles
- Renewable Energy (particularly solar and wind)
- Smart Grid
