Welcome to The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Applied Science, a place where architects and landscape architects, engineers and nurses contribute to the betterment of society.

Comprising the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, the School of Nursing, and all Engineering departments, programs and research centres at both UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses, Applied Science represents a sampling of the professions that support our civil and sustainable society.

In Applied Science, our people—faculty, students and staff—are dedicated to inspiring innovation and effecting positive change. For Example:

Nursing student Pauline Voon recently travelled to Ethiopia to educate nurses on HIV/AIDS transmission, increasing the well-being of nurses, patients and children.

Professor AnnaLisa Meyboom works with architecture students and connects with engineering students to create adaptable architecture that responds to people’s needs, giving autonomy to those who would otherwise be reliant on caregivers.

Engineering student Naeem Mawji is working to deliver sustainable and affordable solar power to Tanzania, potentially improving the lives of 43 million people.

ReFleX Wireless, a team of UBC Engineering students, won the 2011 NYC Next Idea competition for their wireless, multipatient monitoring solution that improves patient care and reduces wire clutter in hospitals.

And Applied Science researchers, staff and students collaborate with Aboriginal partners to address partner-community challenges — health policy and practice, clean water, mining, and youth science and engineering education.

Although stellar, these examples are by no mean isolated or rare. Applied Science is filled with stories of students, faculty and staff contributing greatly to our collective future.

I am pleased to join with our partners across and outside the university to ensure that we in Applied Science do our part to fulfill UBC’s vision of educating global citizens who promote the values of a civil and sustainable society and conduct research to benefit British Columbia, Canada and the world. As one of the world’s premier academic institutions, this is not just our vision, this is our responsibility.

Since its establishment in 1915 Applied Science has a long and distinguished history of educating leaders and making significant research contributions. Building on a solid foundation, we invite you to be part of the future with us—architecting and landscaping a more livable world, bringing nursing scholarship into practice and engineering a better future.

I offer my warmest welcome all who join us in UBC’s Faculty of Applied Science and contribute to addressing the challenges facing our local and global communities.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at dean@apsc.ubc.ca.
